Job Summary
The Production Costing Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and analyzing accurate cost structures for manufacturing products, including server racks, cabinets, enclosures, and related data center infrastructure. This role ensures material, labor, and overhead costs are accurately captured to support competitive pricing, profitability, and continuous improvement initiatives. The position works closely with Engineering, Production, Procurement, and Finance teams to drive cost transparency, efficiency, and data-driven decision-making across manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Costing & Analysis
- Prepare and analyze product cost estimates based on BOM, routing, labour, and overhead.
- Review manufacturing variances and identify root causes (material usage, labour efficiency, machine downtime).
- Conduct cost simulations for new products, design changes, and process improvements.
- Maintain and update standard costing in the ERP system.
- Financial Reporting & Control
- Support month-end closing activities related to production costing.
- Reconcile actual production cost vs. standard cost and highlight variances.
- Prepare cost reports, margin analysis, and profitability studies for management review.
- Ensure compliance with internal control policies and audit requirements.
- Production & Process Support
- Collaborate with Production, Engineering, and Supply Chain to gather accurate cost data.
- Evaluate manufacturing processes to identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Monitor material consumption, scrap, and wastage levels to ensure accuracy of reporting.
- Participate in productivity improvement initiatives (Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma).
- Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist in annual budgeting and forecasting for production cost, overheads, and capex.
- Provide input for cost assumptions, labour requirements, and production efficiency targets.
- Evaluate financial impact of process and production changes.
- ERP & Data Management
- Maintain product master data: BOM, routing, cost centres, labor rates, and overhead absorption.
- Validate production transactions and ensure data accuracy in the ERP system.
- Generate costing and production efficiency reports using ERP and BI tools.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Finance, Production, Engineering, and Procurement teams to ensure accurate costing.
- Support new product introduction (NPI) costing and project feasibility studies.
- Provide cost training or guidance to non-finance team members when needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- 2–5 years of experience in costing, manufacturing, or production engineering.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills.
- Experience in ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, BAAN, or similar).
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, BOM, routing, and cost accounting principles.
- Proficiency in Excel and data analysis.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate across functions.
Preferred Skills (Optional)
- Experience in Lean Manufacturing, cost optimization, or continuous improvement projects.
- Familiar with CAD drawings and engineering change management.
- Knowledge of Design-for-Cost and Design-for-Manufacturing principles.
- Understanding of ISO 9001 or Quality Management Systems (QMS).
- Familiar with BI tools and advanced costing dashboards.
